An earthquake registering 4.1 on the Richter scale near Tauranga has been reported as a false alarm.
GeoNet reported the quake hit east of Tauranga around 3.29pm but soon after sending an alert, deleted the event.
GeoNet originally reported the quake had a focal depth of 9km and would have been moderate if it was an accurate event.
