Deed of Settlement signed with iwi

The Crown has signed a deed of settlement for historical Treaty claims with Ng?ti Pukenga at Te Whet? o Te Rangi Marae near Tauranga, Minister for Treaty of Waitangi Negotiations Christopher Finlayson announced today.

The deed settles the comprehensive claims specific to Ng?ti Pukenga in the region. Ng?ti P?kenga is also negotiating redress relating to its shared and overlapping interests in the region as part of the Tauranga Moana Collective, along with Ng? Hap? o Ng?ti Ranginui and Ng?i Te Rangi.

'Crown initiated military conflict in 1864 and subsequent actions including confiscation left Ng?ti Pukenga without sufficient land in Tauranga to meet their economic and cultural needs,” Mr Finlayson says. 'We can never fully compensate for these wrongs. However this settlement will enable the people of Ngati Pukenga to look forward to a stronger future.”

The settlement includes includes financial and commercial redress of $5 million; the return of culturally significant properties including Liens block, Pae ki Hauraki, Te Tihi o Hauturu and Otukopiri; $500,000 for cultural revitalisation, and $180,000 for marae revitalisation in Manaia.

'Signing this deed of settlement with Ng?ti Pukenga is an important step towards settling all historical grievances in the Bay of Plenty and New Zealand as a whole.”

The settlement will be given effect through legislation.

In the 1920's a prominent Maori leader said that "all claims have now been settled, there is nothing left of merit" now that alloed to all of NZ but especially Waikato/BOP area, so what happened since that resulted in all of this leech like stuff ever since.

I dont understand NZ trying to cut welfare spending in one corner and increasing it in another, these claims have no merit, its just money for nothing. my question is what has the likes of Finlayson and co got to get out of it, settlements being paid out so fast its hard to keep up and where will it end. IT WONT! Maria krarups for PM.
