Toddler nearly drowns in hot pool

A Bay of Plenty toddler is fighting for his life in Starship Hospital after being found face down in a Whakatane hot pool.

The two-year-old was found in a pool at Awakeri Hot Springs, 16km southwest of Whakatane, about 2pm yesterday.

A toddler is in Starship Hospital after being found face down in a hot pool.

It is believed the child was unsupervised and an older child raised the alarm after finding the toddler face down.

An adult pulled the child from the water and CPR was performed before the boy was taken to Whakatane Hospital by ambulance.

A St John Paramedic spokesperson says the toddler was conscious and crying when he left the Awakeri Hot Springs.

The toddler was transferred to Starship Hospital by air ambulance overnight as his condition deterriorated.

A Whakatane Hospital spokesperson says the toddler is in a serious but stable condition before he left for Auckland.

What kind of parents would leave a 2 year old unsupervised at the hot pools? If the child comes through this OK I hope they prosecute the parents to the fullest extent!!

When I lived in that district council strictly enforced the pool fencing act to the letter, SO how did a 2 year old get inside the council designed standard of fencing?? Where were the CAREGIVERS at that crucial moment, may not have actually been the parents at the time don't forget 'wreck1080'
