Tairua gets marina

A second marina is to be built on the Coromandel's east coast following planning consent approval for a 95-berth marina at Puku Bay, Tairua.

A 205-berth marina under construction at Whangamata is expected to be in use this summer.
The consents were granted by Environment Waikato (EW) and Thames-Coromandel District Council (TCDC).
Two independent commissioners hearing consents under EW's jurisdiction – plus a ministerial appointee - have also recommended to the Minister of Conservation that he grants consents for a 2.1 hectare development by Tairua Marine Ltd and Pacific Paradise Ltd, to go ahead.
The decisions of the commissioners are available at www.ew.govt.nz/tairua and follow hearings at Tairua in November 2008 and May this year.
Before building the marina the developers have to realign the flow of Graham's Stream, which runs through Paku Bay. They then have to build a bird roost in the bay to mitigate effects of the development. Permission for car parking on land that is to be reclaimed was declined.
Approvals were granted for a walkway and boardwalk on the Paku Bay reserve, construction of a 50,000 litre fuel storage facility and construction of a collector tank for the sewage pump-out facility.
