Te Awamutu’s Mitch Fabish has continued his dominant start to the speedway season, claiming a third consecutive Midget Car feature race victory at Baypark Speedway on Sunday night.

Fabish won the Easysteel Bill Buckley Classic, the headline event of Baypark’s annual fireworks meeting, after holding off a determined challenge from Auckland teenager Alec Insley.

The meeting was postponed by 24 hours because of wet weather, but competitors were greeted with a fast, high-grip track when racing got underway on Sunday evening, a Baypark Speedway statement said.

After qualifying fourth through the heat races, Fabish moved into the lead on lap five with an outside pass on Brock Maskovich.

He then withstood pressure from Insley during the middle stages of the 25-lap feature before taking victory by 0.608 seconds in a race that ran uninterrupted from green flag to chequered flag.

The win extends Fabish’s unbeaten start to the season, following victories at Baypark’s Labour Weekend season opener and last weekend’s Rosetown 40-lapper at Kihikihi.

“The track was fast and technical tonight and there was a lot of lapped traffic. It was a good battle with Alec,” Fabish said.

Fabish is campaigning a new Terminator chassis this season alongside off-season upgrades to his Australian-developed GRD engine package.

“The car is awesome to drive. We struggled a little bit in the heat races, but for the feature it was spot on.”

Insley finished second while Maskovich rounded out the podium. Hamilton driver Daniel Thomas and Auckland’s Ben Morrison completed the top five.

American visitor Ethan Mitchell showed promising speed before crashing out of his second heat race during his first appearance of a third New Zealand campaign.

In Sprint Car competition, former New Zealand champion Jonathan Allard maintained his own impressive form, scoring his second feature race win of the season.

The Californian led from start to finish in the 20-lap final, although Auckland racer Ryan O’Connor closed the gap in the closing stages and finished just 0.643s behind. Hayden Williams completed the podium.

“It wasn’t an old guys’ track. It was pretty fast and physical, but the Baypark team did a great job on the track prep after all the rain on Saturday. It’s been a good start to the season,” Allard said.

The Super Stock class also provided close competition, with Dan Pollock topping the points standings.

A pair of second-place finishes and a third gave Pollock a one-point advantage over Todd Hemingway, who recorded two race wins and a sixth placing during the night.

Baypark Speedway’s next meeting is on November 28 and will feature the annual South Pacific Super Saloon Car Championship.
