Cold starts, warm afternoons ahead for BoP

Warm, clear afternoons are on the cards for the region this week.

Bay of Plenty residents can expect a classic spring weather mix this week, with colder mornings giving way to sunny and warm afternoons.

In its latest weather update, MetService said parts of the North Island will wake to another cold start on Tuesday as clear overnight skies allow temperatures to tumble.

However, daytime conditions are expected to be much more pleasant, with sunshine dominating for many areas.

While eastern parts of the South Island are forecast to climb above 20C, temperatures across the Bay of Plenty are expected to reach the high teens, creating comfortable spring conditions for the second week of the school holidays.

MetService meteorologist Alanna Burrows said settled weather would be the theme for much of the week, although some areas could still see showers.

“Lots of sunshine” is expected on Tuesday, Burrows said, although the odd shower could develop in the northeastern North Island as easterly winds push some moisture onshore.

Wednesday is expected to start much the same, with cool morning temperatures followed by sunny spells. However, cloud and scattered showers may develop further east in regions such as Gisborne and Hawke’s Bay.

By Thursday, an easterly airflow is forecast to become established across the country. While areas south of the Bay of Plenty may have low cloud and patchy drizzle, conditions are expected to become brighter for northern and western parts of the North Island.

The spring pattern means residents should be prepared for significant temperature swings, with chilly early mornings followed by mild afternoons.
