One person has died following a motorcycle crash on Takitimu Drive in Tauranga.

Police were called to a single-vehicle crash involving a motorbike near the Waihī Rd on-ramp about 11.15am.

A police spokesperson said the rider died at the scene.

“Sadly, despite best efforts, one person died at the scene,” police said.

Hato Hone St John said it was alerted to the crash on SH2 Waikareao Expressway/Takitimu Drive at 11.11am.

One ambulance, one rapid response vehicle and one operations manager were sent to the scene.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand northern communications shift manager Paul Radden said a Tauranga crew also attended and assisted police and ambulance staff.

The road was closed for about two hours while the Serious Crash Unit conducted a scene examination and emergency services worked at the site.

Police said Takitimu Drive reopened at 1.20pm.

Inquiries into the circumstances of the crash are ongoing.
