Serious crash closes Takitimu Drive in Tauranga

A serious crash has closed part of State Highway 2/Takitimu Drive in Tauranga, causing heavy traffic delays in both directions.

Police were called to a single-vehicle crash near the Waihi Rd on-ramp at about 11.15am.

Initial indications suggest there are serious injuries and the Serious Crash Unit has been advised, police said.

"The road is closed while emergency services are in attendance. 

"Motorists are advised to avoid the area and expect delays."

Hato Hone St John said it was alerted to a motor vehicle crash on SH2 Waikareao Expressway/Takitimu Drive at 11.11am.

A spokesperson said one ambulance, one rapid response vehicle and one operations manager were sent to the scene.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand northern communications shift manager Paul Radden said a Tauranga crew was assisting police and ambulance staff at the crash.

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi said traffic was heavy on Takitimu Drive in both directions because of the crash.

“Expect delays and follow the direction of emergency services on site,” the agency said.

“The road is expected to remain closed for some time. People are urged to avoid the area and allow extra time for a detour.

“For light vehicles, SH2 and SH29 travellers can exit onto 15th Avenue. Heavy vehicles will need to use SH29A (via Moffat/Cambridge/SH29).”
