Rodney Calver has spent years giving his time and energy to the Katikati community.

Through Acorn Foundation, he has also chosen a way for his generosity to continue beyond his lifetime.

Inspired by the principle of tithing – where people give one-tenth of their income to a religious establishment – Rod and his wife Maryanne have chosen to leave a percentage of their share portfolio to the Acorn Foundation.

For Rod, the decision reflected his connection to the community he calls home and his belief in supporting others.

His involvement in Katikati includes Rotary and helping co-ordinate the Katikati Men with Cancer Exercise Class. The exercise group brings together men who understand the challenges of cancer.

Alongside movement and exercise comes friendship, conversations and coffee.

That care for others also shaped his decision to give through Acorn. “We give the money to Acorn because I can see the positive benefits that it does give in the community. It’s good for my soul and good for theirs, too,” he said.

Acorn Foundation CEO Lori Luke said her organisation invests gifts, with a portion of the returns supporting charitable causes every year.

“This allows a donor’s generosity to continue helping others well into the future. After providing for loved ones, a gift in a will can reflect a person’s care for their community.

“It is a way to keep supporting the people and causes closest to their heart,” she said.

“This Wills Month, Rod’s story is a great example of how the values we live by can shape what we leave behind.”
