One person is in a serious condition after a crash in the Bay of Plenty.

Police were called to a crash on State Highway 33, between Maungarangi Rd and Old Coach Rd, around 9.20am.

The road is currently closed.

Police said the crash involved a car and a pedestrian, and confirmed one person has sustained serious injuries.

Hato Hone St John was called to the crash at 9:17am.

One ambulance, one operations manager and one helicopter responded to the scene.

“Our ambulance staff treated one patient and took them to Tauranga Hospital by helicopter in a serious condition,” a spokesperson said.

A nearby witness who wished to remain anonymous said they heard it was a hit-and-run road rage incident.

“There are helicopters here, police, the ute that was involved has taken off.

“There are police cars everywhere, a fire truck, an ambulance, and the roads have been cut off.”

“The Serious Crash Unit has been advised, and the road is expected to remain closed for some time while emergency services work at the scene,” police said.

Motorists are advised to avoid the area and expect delays.

A detour is available for northbound traffic from Rotorua via SH30, SH34 and SH2 until Te Puke roundabout. Southbound traffic, follow in reverse.

SH36 is also available for light vehicles.
