The Toyota Corolla remains the go-to first car for New Zealanders, with new data confirming its long-standing dominance among budget buyers.

Latest insights from Trade Me show the reliable hatchback continues to top the list of most inquired-about vehicles priced under $5000, ahead of models such as the Suzuki Swift and Nissan Tiida.

Trade Me Motors head Brendan Hall said the Corolla’s enduring appeal comes down to one key factor – reliability.

“The Toyota Corolla has been a staple on Kiwi roads for decades, and for good reason,” Hall said in a statement.

“When you’re buying your first car, especially on a tight budget, reliability is the absolute top priority.

“Buyers know that with a Corolla, they’re getting a durable engine, excellent fuel economy and affordable parts. It’s the ultimate peace-of-mind purchase.”

Tight supply fuels competition

While demand for entry-level vehicles remains steady, supply is tightening.

Inquiries for cars priced under $5000 have risen slightly year-on-year by 1.2%, but buyer intensity has jumped significantly – up 22% per vehicle.

“We’re seeing a squeeze at the entry-level end of the market,” Hall says. “When a good budget car is listed, it gets snapped up incredibly quickly.”

That demand is reflected in sales speeds. The median time on site for sub-$5000 vehicles is just 14 days, while sought-after models such as the Corolla and Toyota Vitz are selling in an average of eight days.

Regional tastes vary

Despite the Corolla’s national dominance, regional data highlights differing preferences shaped by local needs.

In Auckland and Hawke’s Bay, the Suzuki Swift ranks as the most inquired-about vehicle, reflecting demand for compact, city-friendly cars.

Further south, Otago bucks the trend, with the all-wheel-drive Subaru Legacy topping the list – suited to alpine conditions and winter driving.

In Gisborne, the Toyota Hilux leads demand, aligning with the region’s strong agricultural base, while the Toyota RAV4 is most popular in Marlborough, where lifestyle properties and rural living are common.

“It’s fascinating to see how geography influences buying decisions,” Hall said.

“A city driver might prioritise a small hatchback for tight parking, while someone in Otago needs the capability of all-wheel drive. There’s no one-size-fits-all when it comes to budget cars in New Zealand.”

Top models under $5000

The Corolla leads a diverse top-10 list of most inquired-about vehicles in the sub-$5000 category, followed by the Suzuki Swift, Nissan Tiida, Mazda Demio, Honda Fit, Mazda Axela, Volkswagen Golf, Subaru Legacy, Nissan Leaf and Toyota Vitz.
