The SPCA is making it easier for families to welcome a new animal into their home, launching its nationwide Clear the Shelters adoption campaign just in time for the school holidays.
For three weeks, from April 13 to May 3, SPCA centres across the country will offer 50% off adoption fees, giving thousands of animals the chance to find loving homes before winter sets in.
With almost 4000 animals currently in SPCA care and more than 1000 ready for adoption right now, families are encouraged to visit their local centre and find a companion that fits perfectly into their lives.
The SPCA also asked the public to consider adopting one of its long‑stay residents – animals who, despite having plenty of love to give, have struggled to find a home.
Among them are Jenga, a playful puppy in Nelson; Jen, a long‑stay black cat in Masterton; and Chase, a 2‑year‑old dog who has been in care for 79 days. A cheeky tuxedo kitten, Lillith, has been waiting in Hamilton since December.
The Hamilton SPCA centre is also home to adult cat Piper, who was originally taken to a vet clinic by a member of the public.
Although his owner was contacted, Piper was never collected. He was later surrendered to the SPCA and has been waiting since January.
“Piper was recently adopted, but sadly had to return to SPCA when it became clear his resident sibling wasn’t comfortable welcoming another cat into the home,” Hamilton centre manager Kyla Robb said.
“This sweet boy absolutely loves gentle pats and soft, reassuring strokes. He isn’t loud or demanding – he enjoys cosy corners, peaceful moments and calm companionship. We’re really hopeful someone can give him the quiet, loving home he deserves.”
SPCA animal care head Selena Francisco said the timing of the campaign aligns perfectly with the school holidays, when families have more flexibility to help a new pet settle in.
“School holidays are an ideal time to bring a new animal into the family,” she said.
“You’re home more, routines are a little more relaxed, and it gives everyone the chance to spend quality time bonding with a new furry friend.”
The SPCA is also reminding the public about the importance of responsible adoption, particularly during kitten season and at a time when puppies are frequently advertised for free online.
“We know people can be tempted by ‘free’ kittens or puppies, but those animals are usually not desexed, microchipped, vaccinated or health‑checked,” Francisco said.
“When you adopt from SPCA, you’re choosing an animal who has been properly cared for, prepared for life as a pet, and supported by our dedicated staff and foster families. It’s the responsible choice for both the animal and the adopter.”
Every SPCA cat and dog adoption includes desexing, microchipping, vaccinations, a full health check and behaviour support. Adopters also receive three months of free SPCA pet insurance, with Purina food vouchers and Pet Direct vouchers to help their new companion settle into their new home.
During the Clear the Shelters campaign, adoption fees will be reduced to:
Kittens: $150
Puppies: $200
Cats: $75
Dogs: $75
Rabbits: $25
