A New Zealand campaign encouraging the eradication of cats is being criticised by the SPCA for its 'disgusting and vitriolic” sentiments.
The Cats to Go initiative composed by philanthropist Gareth Morgan is encouraging Kiwis not to replace their domestic cats once they pass away in an effort to rid the country and protect native wildlife from the furry felines.
A campaign urges people not to replace their domestic cats in an effort to protect native wildlife.
The website suggests the public rethink keeping cats as pets, even suggesting that euthanising domestic cats 'is an option”.
New Zealand SPCA chief executive Bob Kerridge advises the public to take little stock in Gareth's publishings.
'He's totally irresponsible for suggesting it…He's an ignorant nutter,” says Bob.
Gareth did not immediately respond to SunLive's request for comment but his website reads:
'If you think New Zealand's native species are precious and should be fostered then it's important you be a responsible cat owner.
'That means keeping them inside 24 hours a day and if that's impractical then when the time comes ensure this is the last cat you ever own.”
The website cites research from the University of Georgia that alleges each household cat will bring home 13 pieces of prey every year, but this will only represent a fifth of their kills.
'You are probably thinking that the above statistics don't apply to your cat. The fact is that your furry friend is actually a friendly neighbourhood serial killer,” says the website.
Bob says there is no evidence to suggest that cats are responsible for dwindling bird life and says cats are more likely to catch pests like vermin.
He points out the most famous example of a city trying to rid cats was many centuries ago in London which was quickly followed by the Black Plague, spread by an overpopulation of rats and mice.
Tauranga SPCA's animal welfare inspector Jason Blair says the idea of completely eradicating all of New Zealand's cats is over the top and also slightly implausible.
'I wouldn't like to see people take that action into their own hands. Cats give us a lot more than they take from our environment,” he points out.
Bob says it is unlikely Gareth will receive much support from New Zealand's communities.
'I would imagine the followers will be limited because the domestic cat is our most popular animal,” says Bob.
Kiwis are some of the biggest cat lovers in the world with New Zealand holding the record for the most cats per capita with 1.4million in the country according to the World Society for the Protection of Animals website.
What do you think? Should cats be eradicated from New Zealand?

personally I think there are more important things to worry about like our youth problems and so on. In the meantime people need to realize having pets is a responsibility just like having kids and like kids they are expensive to own. They need to be neutered and kept inside at night and micro-chipped andregistered etc we have to responsible petowners to protect our wildlife and enjoy our feline friends
I agree with Mr Morgan

I agree with Mr Morgan. Cats kill lizards, frogs, birds and even try to catch peoples goldfish. The problem is that owners allow their cats out at night or whenever and these cats roam into neighbours properties, defecating, urinating and terrorizing other pets (goldfish, birds, rabbits and guineapigs etc). I applaud anyone who lays poison on their own property to kill unwanted cats destroying their property. I also have a little trick that ensures no cat ever ever comes back, but I will not mention it here! Cats should be licenced, with a compulsory bell around their neck and not be allowed out of their owners property.
certain type
Posted on 22-01-2013 17:51 | By Sambo
only a certain type needs eradication, and go Gareth, you are the man, all you do gooders out there, I would say lighten up!!!!, he is only taking the pssss, and if you seriously think an idea like this would work, well you need your I.Q tested quickly, and Mr Kerridge I used to respect you, why would you even want to demean yourself by answering questions from the social media press on this,is beyond me, I do like a good laugh, and society needs characters, like "Concrete Mixer Tim", and Boris the London Mayor, they are good for some fun and laughter, on a more serious note, traceybjammet is exactly correct, and I have been advocating the same thing for some time, so Gareth sign me up.!!!!
Get rid of dogs
Posted on 22-01-2013 17:51 | By Johnney
How many cats have savaged and maimed humans. Look how many dogs have. I think certain dogs should be banned
I hate cats too
Posted on 22-01-2013 18:44 | By Captain Sensible
Cats are a nightmare for smaller animals/birds/reptiles. They also wander into neighbours properties and do their business in gardens and lawns. I think cats should be killed and banned. Any cat I trap never sees its owner again!
More important things to do.

Centuries of cat ownership should be changed on the whim of one man....yeah right.
Hypocrisy
Posted on 22-01-2013 19:10 | By Frecks
An idea being put forward by a member of a species that kills and often sadistically and for self gratification, ego, the desire for power and greed and because they think it is their right and that they are better. Im not just talking about murder here but those things the human race has labelled war, religion, hunting, fishing, farming so we can justify it to ourselves! How many races and species has man kind wiped out or continue to treat sadistically because they think its their right and they know best? And dont get me started on the "death" of the land that man has caused. I support responsible pet ownership but lets not forget we are animals too and the damage we have caused as a species far outweighs that any other has done.

Do they taste like chicken ? Maybe Gareth Morgan could start a hamburger chain !
More controls on cats
Posted on 22-01-2013 21:52 | By philthrottle
I suspect that Gareth has gone a few bridges too far, but it is completely reasonable that cats should have similar controls on them to dogs in our society. If dogs did the things that cats frequently get away with there would be an outcry !
Cats??

Cats are not the problem here at all. If all you people really care so much about the wildlife why don't you go out there and save some wildlife yourself instead of trying to kill off domestic cats. They are a pet, a responsibility, and a BIG part of our family!!

God given

I thought god created all creatures and now we have someone trying to play god. Mr Morgan I would concentrate on what you are good at and leave the eradication of species to who created them.

This Gareth Morgan must have had a cat scare when he was a baby the poor weee man how about we lock you mr Gareth Morgan in a house 24/7 would you like that as you are just as bad if not worse a killer as cats are yes you eat meat you go fishing (maybe) but you eat these and if you dont kill them someone else kills them for you, SO GIVE IT A REST and leave the cats alone and if people are responsible they will get there cats fixed so there are not as many strays around Grow up man
Grow up man

there are more things out in the wild that are killing birds like stoats etc
Well said Gareth
Posted on 23-01-2013 15:02 | By pomfart
His real issue is that he is sick of his neighbours cats constantly crapping in his garden, and so am I. It's cat owners that are ignorant. I collect the cat crap and fling it back to where it belongs and I will shoot the little swines if I catch them. If they are replaced I'll get more target practice. If cat owners subject their little friends to this game then it's them that are cruel. Do ya feel lucky punk.
NZ are Lazy Killers
Posted on 24-01-2013 10:56 | By Wonkytonk
The world thinks NZ is green and environmental...but as we all know all we do is Spray and Kill Everything from plants to animals and blame others for bringing them here when kiwis are lazy and cant be bothered to sort out their property and pets out without killing them all!
SPCA
Posted on 25-01-2013 19:58 | By YOGI
Society for the "prevention" of cruelty to Animals. So I am sure it is cruel to the native wildlife of NZ that they are wholesale slaughtered by cats (and other imported pests). I think that the SPCA has the head in the sand.
Natural torturers
Posted on 26-01-2013 13:52 | By Papamoaner
There are many animals that kill for food, and perhaps some for fun, but cats are the most obnoxious killers because they don't just kill. They torture, and apply slow painful death for pure pleasure, even when not hungry. Cat owners seem to think this is ok. Speaks volumes about human nature doesn't it.
Watchdog
Posted on 27-01-2013 20:02 | By Watchdog
I seem to recall Mr Morgan was in favour of killing off all the Antarctic Toothfish because "If we don't do it, someone else will." That reasoning was also flawed.
By the look of some of these zealots if they were animals you would put them out of their misery.
Posted on 27-01-2013 21:12 | By RORTSCAM
Morgan and his disciples clearly have a phobia about cats but hang on cats haven't only just appeared on the scene. Start a fund to provide the cash to eradicate wild and feral cats by all means and put controls in place for domestic cats - the rest is just pure wittery. The problem is with the humans not the cats.Next these do gooders will be rounding on the few lions and tigers left in the world and calling for their extermination.
Register Cats same as dogs
Posted on 31-01-2013 13:11 | By Tyraone
I believe Queensland in Australia has a system that cats must be microchipped and registered same as dogs with the local council. Perhaps NZ should adopt a similar policy. I agree there are to many abandoned cats, feral, and in some areas an over population of same. Cats carry more human contracted diseases and infections more than dogs. I am not entirely anti cat but tired of the irresponsible owners that permit their cats to sire or breed litter after litter and not bothering to have them desexed. Queens as well as Toms)
CATS MUST GO
Posted on 02-02-2013 16:14 | By Can do it
As a possum culler for years it has amazed me how deep into our native forests that feral cats eventually get. The bird life they survive on evidengt in their faeces and gut when trapped and killed by myself. I agree with the SPCA taking these cats and destroying them forever so at least they will be doing something proactive for once. I say goodbye to ALL cats by attrition and hopefully families with cats will harden up and start loving each other as much instead

interesting comments above, the bottom line is imo, if an animal can be owned then the owner has to take responsibility and ensure they are contained. i for one am fed up with being woken in the night with cat fights. i dont own a cat. i get letters from the council when my dogs bark as neighbours dob in, yet the dogs are registered and i have them to alert me when unusual things come on my property....usually unrestrained cats.! microchip and keep them inside at night or be fined.!
