Outspoken environmental campaigner David Bellamy is urging Bay of Plenty residents to be cautious when planting in their gardens this spring.
Bellamy urges caution over spring planting.
He used the launch of the Bay of Plenty Plant Me Instead booklet to highlight the importance of understanding what plant varieties should go into gardens, and which varieties should not.
The Plant Me Instead booklet was produced to profile plants in the Bay of Plenty, which have the potential to spread as weeds.
It also gives suggestions for locally sold, non weedy plants, which can be used to replace weeds in the garden.
David says it's important that what is planted in the garden does not have the potential to become the next gorse of New Zealand.
