Hot temperatures for Tauranga

Tauranga's unsettled weather conditions are likely to continue according to the National Institute of Water and Atmosphere three month forecast with warm temperatures for the next week.

NIWA is expecting a lower than normal pressure in the south Tasman Sea and to the southeast of the Chatham Island, with enhanced south-westerly winds over most of the country.

Hot temperatures are predicted to continue in the Bay.

Yesterday, temperatures in Tauranga spiked to more than 30 degrees with Tauranga Airport recording a 30.1degree high at 2.12pm accompanied by strong winds.

The high winds are being attributed to the slight melting of the temporary ice rink on The Strand in Tauranga.

A sheen of water was seen on the portable rink yesterday.

Ice Rink World NZ shift manager Matt Beazley says generators worked hard to keep the rink chilled and it was more the wind than the heat melting the ice.

The MetService is predicting the hot temperatures to continue with 26 degrees forecast until Friday and sunny conditions with a high of 27 degrees at the weekend.

The overnight low temperatures are also expected to be above average with an overnight low of 16 and 19 degrees predicted for today and tomorrow respectively, reaching 20 degrees on Thursday.

Regional predictions for the next three months for the Bay of Plenty, Northland, Auckland and Waikato regions show January-March temperatures are likely to be in the near average range, according to NIWA.

Rainfall, soil moisture levels and river flows are all likely to be in the near normal range for the season as a whole.
