A suspicious fire involving a shipping container has been extinguished at a commercial property near the intersection of State Highway 2 and Minden Road in Te Puna.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand confirmed the fire was reported at 1.42pm.

Northern Fire Communications Centre shift manager Michael Anderson said three fire appliances were dispatched to the scene.

“We received a report of a building fire in the Minden area,” Anderson said. “Upon arrival, crews discovered a shipping container on fire on a commercial site.”

One fire truck was dispatched from the Greerton station and two from Tauranga. Crews successfully extinguished the fire, and all units had left the scene by 2.58pm.

“The fire is being deemed suspicious,” Anderson said.

Anderson said no fire investigator had been assigned to attend the scene.

Dire Emergency

I saw the Greerton fire truck arrive at this fire, as pictured.
They have changed the words from Fire Emergency to " Dire " Emergency.
When asked about it, apparently "across the country the trucks are so old and worn out they breakdown regularly".
I had a look at the NZ Professional Firefighters Union Facebook page and was shocked at how bad it is.
We rely on these people to save us
... but who saves them ?

Did you know the front line truck at the Mount is 28 years old? By law, contracted school buses must be less than 26 years old. Last week both of Aucklands aerials were out of action, so they had Wellingtons, which also broke down. Tauranga, the 5th biggest city in the country, with apartments higher than Hamilton doesn't even have an aerial. Our fire service truely has a Dire Emergency

I Support Them But . . .

To use the fire engines, ambulances etc as mobile billboards or scribble boards is disgusting and unprofessional. They look an absolute mess.
