The energy at Pāpāmoa College was electric as students gathered to welcome some of New Zealand’s most celebrated athletes — the Black Ferns.

In partnership with Toyota NZ, NZ Rugby brought the national women’s team to the school for an unforgettable afternoon of connection, inspiration, and fun.

For NZ Rugby, this visit was more than just a promotional event — it was a celebration of the deep bond between the Black Ferns and the communities that shaped them.

“This is a big year for our players,” a spokesperson said, “and the connection between this team and their communities across NZ is special”.

The Black Ferns’ journey began in grassroots rugby, and returning to schools like Pāpāmoa College is a way to honour those beginnings.

“Grassroots and community rugby is where the Black Ferns began their journeys,” the spokesperson explained.

“Being able to help inspire up-and-coming players is part of our purpose.”

Students were treated to a hands-on experience, running drills and learning skills alongside the elite athletes.

But the day wasn’t just about technique — it was about sparking dreams.

“We hope these students enjoy meeting our epic Black Ferns, and maybe even see themselves as the next generation of rugby stars.”

This event was one of four across the country on the same day.

With the NPC, FPC, and Heartland competitions under way, fans can expect more opportunities to connect with players in coming months.

Grassroots events are a cornerstone of NZ Rugby’s long-term strategy to grow the game.

“Our purpose is all about inspiring and unifying through rugby,” the spokesperson said.

Staying connected to grassroots rugby is vital for the Black Ferns.

“It’s where rugby happens,” the spokesperson emphasised.

“It’s where players learn not only how to be good athletes, but good teammates and community members.”

NZ Rugby’s 10-year Women and Girls in Rugby strategy aims to increase participation and foster inclusivity.

“We work closely with players, coaches, provincial unions and Super rugby clubs to make sure rugby is supported and visible in all communities.”

As national role models, the Black Ferns play a crucial part in making rugby feel inclusive and welcoming.

“They embody what makes rugby great,” the spokesperson said.
