The first of three non-fluoridated community water sources is now available at the Alice Johnson Oval, off Doncaster Drive near Gordon Spratt Reserve, Pāpāmoa.
At the Ministry of Health’s direction, Tauranga City’s water supply has been fluoridated since October 2024.
In response to community interest, Tauranga City Council asked staff to explore accessible and affordable alternatives for those who prefer non-fluoridated water.
An option was identified to install on-site water treatment systems at selected bore supply points within council reserves.
The water in these taps is not processed through the city’s water treatment plants.
Instead, these systems use cartridge filters and UV light to treat the water.
No additional fluoride beyond natural background levels has been added at these community taps.
Mayor Mahé Drysdale said he was pleased the people of Tauranga now had access to an alternative water source, after the Director-General of Health gave the green light for three supply points.
“Our council heard concerns from locals about central Government’s directive to add fluoride, so it’s pleasing we’re able to offer people more choice.”
Council infrastructure general manager Nic Johansson said residents could collect water from the new community tap in Pāpāmoa.
“While we can’t guarantee the quality of the water after it has left the tap, we encourage those who choose this option to handle and store it responsibly.”
Two more non-fluoridated community taps are proposed for Wharepai Domain in the city centre and Waipuna Park in Welcome Bay, pending further water quality sampling.
The dates when these taps will be ready have yet to be confirmed.

Wrong way around

We should not fluoridate the water but those wanting to digest it take a pill.
We would save millions and Council would have more money to spend.
wrong way around !

I agree 100% with your comment
How much
Posted on 31-07-2025 14:26 | By DaveTheCynic
money has been spent to appease the anti-science brigade?
Yep

I agree with Cynic.
Tauranga Council are following the Health Department and science in this matter. If this is the thing that bothers people what a great simple life it is.
Such a waste

Of time and money for the council to have to deal with anti-science and conspiracy theorists.
Ridiculous

The mandate is anti science. So disappointing that NZ is not keeping up with the latest research re neurological degradation from fluoride. But great the council is at least offering an alternative I suppose.
Who pays?

I hope that it is a user pays system? ie whoever uses these taps pays for the ammount they take. Taxpayers are already paying for flouridation so those who don't want flouridation should pay for the priviledge...

Have those saying this is a waste of money for anti science people ever realised what science is? You can disagree and if you look around the world at how many countries have banned flouride for its poisonous properties then I think it's fair for those here to know if they don't want it. Agree that if you want flouride take a pill. Stop spending millions putting it in our water. And for what reason???
All Opinions Welcome

Where does this "anti science" term come from. Just because people have a differing opinion, it doesn't mean they can't have a say. Just imagine if the stats actually prove they're, correct? I have worked with Scientists for many years and believe me, they aren't always right. Take the blinkers off people and don't believe everything you are told.
Waste of money

Same people who complain about council wasting money applauding this ridiculous pandering to nut jobs and conspiracy theorists!

...the reason given for implementing this is to look for 'accessible and affordable alternatives who prefer non-flouridated water'. I didn't read the phrase 'nut jobs and conspiracy theorists' mentioned in the article. Perhaps for some they have medical reasons or simply dislike the taste of flouride in water (for which as a ratepayer they are entitled to)...so with such negative comment I would be wondering who the ACTUAL 'nut job' is....
Maybe missing the point

The requirement to fluoridate water isn't the councils choice they must comply or be heavily find everyday they don't do so. So unlike other issues the council are not guilty so criticism is misplaced. The fact that they have tried to give a alternative and some cost is the only issue and relatively petty
In favour of pure drinking water

So pleased to hear that there’s gonna be a healthy alternative. Was never in favour of adding toxic fluoride to our water. A byproduct of the aluminium industry and has been withdrawn from several countries around the world. Been spending money on bottled water which certainly tastes better but worried about the plastic nano particles from that also. Not a conspiracy theorist, not a nutter just someone who cares about What goes into my body and being healthy.
No Fluoride?

Some people are not up to date with the science of fluoride. Its not a chemical its a mineral found in rocks, soil, water ways. There is plenty of science evidence available to know its good for your teeth. If you don't want to drink the fluoride water just put in a filter its simple. Also bottled water is cheap at the supermarkets $10.50 for 24 bottles. Also think of when you are out and getting water from a cafe or restaurant this is likely to have fluoride in it. I haven't heard of anyone getting sick or deaths related to fluoride water. The NZ dentist association have been wanting fluoride in water for decades. Look it up on their web site.
So the main problems is not fluoride its SUGAR. Thousands of kids teeth are rotting, how do you fix that?
