A tsunami advisory remains in place for New Zealand after a massive earthquake Wednesday morning.
The magnitude 8.8 quake struck off the coast of Kamchatka, Russia at 11.25am (NZT).
It is the only quake over magnitude 8 this year, and the first of this size since 2021.
An emergency alert was issued to New Zealanders yesterday at 4.12pm, warning Kiwis to stay away from sea and shore.
NEMA said tsunami activity had already reached NZ.
It said the threat “must be regarded as real” and the first currents and surges are unlikely to be the largest and are expected to continue over many hours.
The tsunami advisory is expected to remain in place until midday Thursday.
Auckland Emergency Management opened four Civil Defence Centres for residents who live aboard marine vessels.

Too many people don't take these warnings seriously. These are the sorts of people that put others lives (and thereby families) at risk. Why should others lose loved family members and friends because they/you deem your idea of sightseeing safer than the professionals warnings and alerts.
They need to heed warnings from professionals and forget about their own self-centered ideas and conspiracies.
Wondering

So we had the first alert in the afternoon, did we need one when many people had just gone to bed, and another at 6.30AM?
Is this an expensive new toy and they had to pay with it?
Why can't we opt out?
I survived quite well guys many decades
