Police are urging drivers to take extra care on the roads across Bay of Plenty this morning, with icy conditions reported.
“There have been a number of crashes across the region already this morning with ice creating dangerous driving conditions,” a police spokesperson said in a statement.
“Please – slow down, watch your following distance, and use your headlights.
“We want everyone to get where they’re going safely this morning.”
In Tauranga, a SunLive reader said it was about 2C when she left for work at 5am.
“I had to hose down my car because it was all iced over.”
According to MetService, there have been icy conditions around the entire country this week.
Places like Dunedin Airport, Timaru, and Wānaka dipped to their lowest temperatures of the year yesterday morning, at -6.7C, -4.7C and -5.1C respectively, while Auckland has had consistently low morning temperatures, dropping below 4C every day so far this week.
Looking ahead, a more active weather pattern was expected to take hold this weekend.
MetService said next week looked more unsettled overall, with warmer temperatures brought in by strengthening northerly winds.
“Showers spread further east on Monday, and by Tuesday.”
