“Here at the circus, we always have more…” the lady ringmaster told the crowd under the big top tent at Mercury Baypark on Friday night. We’d just watched a man fly out of a human cannon ball and they were offering more, writes The Weekend Sun editor Merle Cave who took her family along to the show.
Yes, the Weber Bros Circus has rolled into town – with daily shows until August 10 – presenting a brand-new show direct from its international tour. And man did they deliver on their promise of more.
The high-energy two-hour performance was enthralling, addictive, mind-numbing and heart-pounding all wrapped in one. As soon as the show begins you’re ripped away from reality and into a world of magic.
I’d taken along my two daughters, aged 8 and 9, nana and hubby; each of us came home with a different favourite act that had us stunned.
The night began with a man jumping off a huge swing – being swung as high as it could go by three fellow performers – and things just kept elevating from there.
The next big act was the acrobatics of a man using the power of his body to swing around a pole. Easy you would think – but the way he twisted and balanced, the angles he negotiated and all at high speed was incredible.

The hula hoop expert pranced and danced with more hoops than Michael Jordan could score. The aerialists were next level. One lady climbed to the top of the big top via two pieces of hanging cloth only to let go and whoosh to the bottom.
Nana’s and my favourite act was a lady who wowed with bubbles. It doesn’t sound thrilling – but her object manipulation was. She had the audience captivated watching her blow super-massive bubbles, pop others to reveal “smoke” and “flames” and illuminate bubbles with a rainbow of colours.

One daughter’s favourite act was a man who ran inside a cylinder while it spun circles with another cylinder attached to the other end. Then he climbed outside and ran around his cylinder while it circled. I thought nana may need a tot of whisky when we got home!
The lighting and sound were spot on, and the flow of acts was impressive too. Behind-the-scenes staff swiftly and safely removed and set up next the act’s equipment while the crowd was in fits of laughter watching a hilarious clown. His jesting, slapstick and mime had everyone engaged.

The second clown, who appeared later, had the whole audience fervently stomping and competing against each other with nothing apart from a whistle, facial expressions and hand gestures. Children and adults alike roared with laughter while following his cues.
The breath-taking fun didn’t stop there – as the lady ringmaster said: there was always more…
Daughter number two loved the lady contortionist, who twisted and bent her body like it was putty. Another lady mastered the trapeze with ease.
But it was two FMX motorbike riders who stole the show’s finale, with their zooming around the Globe of Death – together at the same time. As we watched, bewitched…well, I’ll leave the show-stopping detail for you to see live. Nana could hardly watch!

Weber Bros’ promo says it’s the entertainment spectacle of the year. Well, we left but with nothing but joy and amazement of the unforgettable event and the incredible talent we witnessed. And I don’t believe I’ve seen anything else come to Tauranga recently that comes close to bedazzling the whole family as this family-run spectacle.
So don’t miss it. Run away to a night at the circus with Weber Bros. You’ll love it – no matter what age you are.
