Three injured in Kawerau crash

One person has been airlifted to Waikato Hospital in a critical condition after a single-vehicle crash in Kawerau.

Two others have been taken to Whakatāne Hospital, said Hato Hone St John.

Emergency services are at the scene near the intersection of Onslow and Hall Sts.

“Hato Hone St John was notified of a motor vehicle incident on Onslow Street / Hall Street, Kawerau, at 3.07pm today,” a spokesperson said.

“Three ambulances, one PRIME [Primary Response in Medical Emergencies]responder, two operations managers, one helicopter, and one rapid response unit are in attendance.

“Three patients were assessed in total. One patient, in critical condition, is being airlifted to Waikato Hospital. Two additional patients, one in serious condition and one in minor condition, have been transported to Whakatāne Hospital by road.”

Police said they were called about 3.20pm.

The road was closed, with diversions in place.

Motorists were asked to please avoid the area, if possible.
