Construction of the new Matekerepu roundabout near Ōpōtiki is continuing, with work advancing despite recent weather conditions.
Located at the intersection of State Highway 2 (SH2) and Wainui Road, the roundabout forms part of the SH2 Wainui to Ōpōtiki safety improvements project, which began in 2021.
The project, aimed at improving road safety, has already delivered shoulder widening, flexible side barriers and rumble strips. These upgrades have made the route significantly safer for motorists. The roundabout will further enhance safety at the busy intersection.
Over June, contractors maintained strong momentum on site, transporting materials under 3-way stop/go traffic control.
Work has also started on widening Wainui Road, with traffic soon to be diverted to a newly sealed shoulder to enable further construction. Streetlights relocated earlier in the project are now functioning well, providing increased visibility and safety.
In Tauranga, work continues on several major transport projects. The Takitimu North Link project has reached a new phase with construction underway on a 120-metre retaining wall and a 127-metre single-lane bridge connecting SH2/Fifteenth Avenue to SH29/Takitimu Drive Toll Road. Six of the nine required piles have already been installed. One lane near Edgecumbe Road remains closed and is expected to stay that way until mid-2026.
In Tauriko, Tauranga City Council has begun upgrading Taurikura Drive. The work includes reconfiguring the road to include extra lanes, two new signalised intersections, and improved pedestrian and cycling access. One of the new intersections will replace the roundabout at Tauranga Crossing’s main entrance. Temporary traffic management and speed restrictions are in place for the 12-month project duration.
At SH29 and Redwood Lane, a new roundabout is open under a temporary layout. Crews will shift lanes and install kerbing between Monday 14 and Tuesday 15 July. On Wednesday 16 July, safety barrier work will take place overnight, with a 30km/h speed limit and stop/go management in place.
Further works continue in Tauriko Village, with overnight activity planned for Sunday 13 and Thursday 17 July. Temporary traffic controls will be in place for service investigations and barrier relocation.
Maintenance work is underway underneath Maungatapu Bridge on SH29A. The work, which will not affect motorists, is expected to finish by the end of September.
On SH2’s Tauranga Eastern Link Toll Road, construction of the Pāpāmoa East Interchange continues. A 2km stretch past the Kaituna River Bridge remains reduced to one lane in each direction, with a 70km/h speed limit.
Across the Western Bay of Plenty, roundabout and intersection upgrades are active on SH2 at Apata Station Road, Esdaile Road, Pahoia Road and Ōmokoroa Road. Motorists should expect delays, temporary speed limits and stop/go traffic control at all sites.
In Rotorua, SH30 Te Ngae Road works continue, with night activity planned for signal and line marking installations. SH5 and SH2 sites at Tumunui and Matatā are also being prepared for the installation of average speed cameras.
In the Eastern Bay, emergency slip repairs continue on SH35 near Tōrere and SH2 in the Waioweka Gorge. The roundabout at Matekerepu is due to be completed by April 2026.
