A Mercedes-Benz has ploughed through the window of the Coupland’s bakery at the Gate Pā Shopping Centre, but witnesses say no one is hurt.

A police spokesman said an “elderly couple” appeared to have mistakenly driven into a shop window.

Hato Hone St John was notified of the incident at 1.03pm and treated a patient in a “minor condition” at the scene, a spokesperson said.

A SunLive reader at the shopping centre said they were leaving another shop and walking past Coupland’s when they noticed the Mercedes-Benz inside the bakery.

“It’s just a normal Sunday at the Gate Pā Shopping Centre. I had been shopping and was going back to my car when I suddenly realised there was a car inside Coupland’s Bakery and the window was all smashed,” said the SunLive reader.

“There are two fire trucks, ambulance and two police cars here. The elderly couple are fine and no one else has been injured.”

A Coupland’s staff member said there were three staff working and some customers inside the shop when the vehicle came through the window.

“Nobody’s been hurt,” the staff member said. “Just a little shaken. We’re all good. The couple in the car are fine, everyone’s fine.

“Fortunately, there were very few customers in the shop, but nobody is hurt.”

Coupland’s was due to be open until 5.30pm but there has been extensive damage.

“I’m not sure if we’re going to be open any more today. Our windows and our tills have been damaged.”

Our beloved ex PM decided in the early 2000's to do away with over 70's driving tests in order to take older voters from Winston.
We now see the consequences. There are people driving who shouldn't be.
Bring the practical tests back.
BTW I'm over 70. For a period I also put my life on the line testing people for their licences.
The horror, the horror.

Was it old age or was it mechanical or medical or just a mistake like you and I could make?
Unfortunately, you're probably right but let's not jump to conclusions and judge on chinese whispers.
