Te Puke Pirates edge out Mount Marlins

A converted try apiece opened the scoring in the clash between Baywide Premier competition leaders Te Puke Sports and Mount Maunganui at Blake Park on the weekend.

The encounter continued to see-saw with both sides posting two further converted touchdowns, with the score locked at 21 all at the halfway stage of the match.

With five minutes remaining on the score clock, Te Puke Sports came from behind to again lock up the game, at 35 all.

In the final play of the match the Pirates kicking machine, Fletcher Carpenter, banged home a penalty goal to give the visitors a narrow 38-35 victory.

Another equally close match took place at Greerton Park where Greerton Marist triumphed against Te Puna by a solitary point.

Te Puna led 17-13 at the break, before the hosts scored twelve points in the second spell, to grab a solitary point 25-24, win.

Whakarewarewa cemented second place in the Baywide title race with a 47-29 win over Rangataua in Rotorua.

With Te Puke Sports and Whakarewarewa seemingly having a finals berth within touching distance - there will be a battle of attrition, between Te Puna (19 points) Mount Maunganui (18) and Tauranga Sports (17) for the last two playoff spots.

The Western Bay of Plenty Championship has all the hallmarks of going right down to the wire, after the WBOPRU results were posted on Saturday.

A top of the table clash between Katikati and Rangiuru resulted in Rangiuru eventually prevailing 36-31 in a hard-fought affair.

Arataki also remained in title contention after dispatching the combined Judea and Matakana Island warriors, 45-17. Eastern Districts beat Papamoa 33 nil.

Baywide Development results saw Mount Maunganui defeat Te Puke Sports 59-5, Greerton Marist replicated their premier counterparts with a 25-24 win over Te Puna, and Whakarewarewa beat a game Rangataua team 48-22.

Local BOPRU Colts/Under 85kg winners were Tauranga Sports, Te Puke Sports and Papamoa.
