Illegal fires at Orokawa Bay near Waihi Beach are threatening rare coastal forest, human life and property reports the Department of Conservation.
DOC Tauranga Ranger Pete Higgins says staff erected new warning signs this week to remind people that fires in this area are illegal.
DOC is warning people not to light fires at Orokawa Bay or anywhere a fire ban is in place.
'Fires are absolutely prohibited anywhere within the scenic reserve, along the Orokawa Bay Track or at the beach there. The risk of any fire getting out of control is just too great”.
'Summer tourists may be unaware of the law and could take risks with fires, so these signs are important, and we want to ensure that locals are under no illusions about how easily a campfire at the beach can lead to a bush fire”, says Pete.
'If you see an illegal fire you can report it to the DOC HOTline 0800 362 468”.
Orokawa Bay Scenic Reserve is home to uninterrupted coastal pohutukawa forest, which was once abundant in Bay of Plenty and Coromandel but is now threatened due to land development.
The Reserve is a great place to take a walk and enjoy the seclusion of the bush and stunning coastal views, says Pete.
Camping, fires, and dogs are not permitted in the reserve, so that natural values can be retained for future generations.
