What’s Your Flava?

Hip Hop, contemporary or jazz - What's Your Flava? Mount Maunganui Dance Academy is performing for the first time at Baycourt today.

The academy's end of year show ‘What's your Flava' is choreographed by Natasha McKenzie and will showcase the students' talent in a storytelling adventure through the language of dance.

The dance academy has had huge success with the third Sir Edmund Hillary Scholarship to be awarded to one of Natasha's students – Leah Parkinson.

Sir Edmund Hillary Scholars must excel in academia, leadership, sports or creative and performing arts. Various professional development opportunities and fees are provided for Scholars.

Leah, who has been dancing since she was three-years-old, says the annual shows are rewarding.

'They allow me to showcase my ability and perform in front of an audience after so much hard practice, so it feels rewarding.

'It is my passion, something I live for, as I have grown up and found enjoyment in dance and learnt new moves and developed technique.

'When I hear music it makes me want to dance.”

Students have been selling chocolates during the past few weeks to fundraise for the show.

There are two shows today including a matinee at 1pm and an evening show at 7pm.

General admission tickets cost $18 for adults and $12 for children aged 2-18.

Under 2's are free. Senior citizens cost $14.

Tickets are available at TicketDirect.
