Tauranga high school students are mapping safe zones, evacuation areas and common meeting places during mock civil defence scenarios this week.
Environment Bay of Plenty (EBOP) and the Tauranga City Council are working together to create this opportunity for students.
Students will use the regional council's Geographical Information Systems to map areas in the scenario.
This initiative has been previously held in Whakatane but this is the first year it has been brought to Tauranga.
EBOP Group Manager of Technology, Miles McConway, says this is a great opportunity for the regional, district and city councils to work with local schools.
'Not only does this give the students an opportunity to see what types of work their local councils do, it also gives them an insight into possible career pathways.”
'Our staff also enjoy the time working with the students and showing them the different aspects of their work,” says Miles.
