An earthquake registering 4.4 on the Richter scale was felt throughout the Bay of Plenty overnight.

GeoNet reports the quake struck the Te Kaha region in the Eastern Bay of Plenty at 10.38pm and was 48km deep.

GeoNet says it has also received a report from one Wellington resident who says they felt it at the bottom of the North Island.

There are no reports of damage.
