Eclipse puts Bay in daytime darkness

A total solar eclipse will see Tauranga plunge into almost complete darkness during the day later this month.

The total eclipse will take place on Wednesday, November 14 with Tauranga set to witness almost 90 per cent coverage of the sun in the morning.

A total solar eclipse will see Tauranga experience 86 per cent darkness during the day.

The eclipse is due to begin in Tauranga at 9.20am and finish at 11.47am, with 86 per cent coverage at 10.30am.

A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon's apparent diameter is larger than the sun, blocking all direct sunlight and turning day into darkness.

According to the Royal Astronomical Society of New Zealand, as seen from New Zealand, the sun and moon will not line up perfectly so Kiwis will only witness a partial eclipse of the sun.

The eclipse will be most impressive from North Cape where 91 per cent coverage is expected at 10.21am.

Perhaps Sunlive or Weekend Sun may publish tips for viewing or taking photos.

Tips #2

Never look directly at teh sun even when 99% eclipsed, always use prjection onto something. Cameras are at risk because they focus the light and heat internally and so the extreme heat can damage the internals if left as such. Never rely on somethign to protect your eyes e.g. dark film strip as these do not do what you think and can always break. BE "VERY" CAREFUL.

Think this is another Council ploy to keep the ratepayers in the dark!

we have black arcoroc plates that work a treat for viewing solar eclipses through you can still clearly see the outline of the sun and the moon crossing it

Yep...

What Day

Any chance you might be more specific on the date this is due to happen rather than "later this month". You are quite specific with the time... Eclipse will happen on 14th November 2012 - further info - http://www.timeanddate.com/eclipse/in/new-zealand/tauranga

WELDING HELMET - WRONG

Posted on 05-11-2012 18:01 | By PLONKER

Hi, wrong answer, looking at the sun in any manner is never a good idea the rays rays are way mor epowerful than any welder, harm will be caused anyway. The only safe way is by projecting the Sun's image onto paper of cardboard or something to then view that image.

Unfortunately these comments dont allow for paragraph spacing. The original articleonly mentioned that the eclipse would occur later this month with no date, but they did give specific times of when it would occur. I only filled in the blanks of what day & a referral site to check out further info. Sunlive have since updated their article.
