Police cordons on Arawa St in Rotorua’s CBD are now lifted after a police incident.

A person in a Free Palestine T-shirt earlier spent hours on the roof of a single-storey building containing a Defence Force careers office.

Police were first called about 12.40pm.

A Rotorua Daily Post reporter says just after 3pm the cordons had been lifted. A witness says the person at the centre of the incident left with police.

During the incident, Arawa St was closed between Tutanekai St and Amohia St and there were police on the ground and on the roof.

A Rotorua Daily Post photographer on Arawa St says the person appeared “angry” and “distressed” and was “talking about Palestine”, he says.

The person also performed a haka.

The Rotorua Daily Post has sought an update on the incident from police.

A prior statement says there was no risk to the public and more information would be released “when we are in a position to do so”.

More to come.
