Some Papamoa residents will be without piped water on Tuesday night when Tauranga City Council works to upgrade the Parton Road water main.
The shutdown will occur during the night from 9pm-5am and will affect all streets east of Parton Road from Simpson Road, including Papamoa Beach Road, right to the end of Gibson Place and Marjorie Lane.
This information from Tauranga City Council weekly bulletin for the week beginning Monday, March 1, published below.
Inflow Reduction Project
* A comparison analysis of stormwater infiltration in the Tye Park area of Welcome Bay, the first area to have gully traps checked by council, shows the positive impact of the project on reducing the amount of stormwater getting into our wastewater system and contributing to sewage overflows. Approximately Tye Park 800 homes had their gully traps inspected in late 2008. A comparison was made between water volumes entering the wastewater system on two separate days – on October 25 (before inspections and follow up action) and on October 3, 2009 (after all gully traps had been inspected and fixed). Both days had rainfall of around 12mm within a 24 hour period. The data shows that 37 per cent less stormwater entered the wastewater system from this area on October 3, 2009, compared to October 25, 2008. This is a big improvement and shows that gully traps kept at the right height are an important element in managing unnecessary treatment of stormwater entering the wastewater system, as well as reducing sewage spills.
* Council is currently carrying out gully trap inspections in the Beaumaris and Bethlehem Heights area, and is pleased to report that the majority of homes visited so far have, 'good' gully traps.
Water Supply:
* The watermain replacement in Hillcrest Road and Cameron Street between Elizabeth and Spring Street is progressing. Apollo Street and Pamela Place are in progress and due to be completed in March.

Drainage:
* Work continues on spraying or clearing of open drains in the city. Mangatawa Drain has been sprayed with Sutherland Rd and Brook St drains cleared by excavator.
* Some minor concrete work to improve the walk access track between Rutherford Reserve and Pillans Road is being done.
* Work to repair the stormwater outlet off Chapel Street (near Mobil Service station ) is almost complete.
* Work continues at Bakels Edible Oils Ltd on replacement and upsizing of a small section of the sewer main within their yard off Hutton Place.
* Repair to the reclaimed water transfer main pipeline coating is required in two locations as identified in a recent survey of the cathodically protected pipeline following recent harbour link bridge work. Scheduled to be completed. A section of newly established garden below the cemetery is one location. Plants and mulching etc will be temporarily moved to allow this work. The other location is in boat ramp car park below the Aerodrome Bridge.
* A sewer overflow at 10th Ave resulted in contamination to the estuary at Memorial Park via the stormwater outlet at the end of 7th Ave. Test results were all clear by Thursday and health warning signs removed. The cause of overflow is being investigated.
* Sewer manholes in the Hynds Rd, Coopers Rd, Wylie St, Sherson St and Manson St gully are being located, marked and checked for condition.
* A count of the muscovy ducks this week at Royal Palm Beach Estate stormwater reserve shows the number at approximately 40 including 10 ducklings. The majority are in the reserve area from Palm Beach Boulevard towards Kokomo Key.
* A report of eel trapping in the waterways at Papamoa has been received and followed up on. Fishing including eeling (especially traps) is not permitted on the stormwater reserves at Papamoa and residents are asked to report such activity to Council and especially if vehicle registrations can be reported.
Stormwater Pollution:
* One pollution issue this week involving the discharge of food waste to the stormwater system from a supermarket loading dock. The discharge required a clean-up using a vacuum truck. Ongoing improvement in housekeeping will be needed at the site. It is important to remember most loading dock areas have stormwater drains that lead directly to streams, or the sea. Food wastes and spills will be washed by rain into the nearest drain and this can cause serious environmental harm. Food waste does not "feed" fish but can poison aquatic life and reduce oxygen levels in waterways which can suffocate fish. Care should be taken to ensure loading dock areas are kept tidy and spills are cleaned up and not hosed into the nearest drain.
* Stormwater Pollution Prevention Bylaw update: An issues and options report was presented to the Strategy and Policy Committee this week to consider the issues to be covered in the draft Stormwater Pollution Prevention Bylaw. The direction given by the Committee will be used to develop the draft bylaw.
Waiari Water Supply Project:
* Three appeals have been received against the resource consents for the construction and operation of a new water intake and treatment plant to serve the Papamoa urban growth area. Tauranga City Council is in discussions with the appellants and parties and was due to report progress to the Environment Court by 26 February 2010.
Bulk Water Meter Installation Project:
* The bulk meter renewal project is under way and will continue until the end of March. The first renewal was undertaken for Mangatawa reservoir meter which is now complete.
Water Demand Management Project:
* A pressure management pilot project has been initiated in the Maungatapu Pressure Zone to reduce leakage. Progress going well and there have been no complaints of low pressures. More investigative work to do to see if we can further reduce nightflow leakage.
