The Minister of Transport is releasing the draft Government Policy Statement on land transport (GPS) 2024 for feedback.

The draft GPS outlines the Government’s plan for investing in land transport over the next 10 years by directing $7 billion per year in expenditure from the National Land Transport Fund.

The draft GPS prioritises economic growth and productivity, increased maintenance and resilience, safety, and value for money from transport expenditure.

It also reintroduces the Roads of National Significance programme that was started under the previous National Government in 2009.

Bay of Plenty MP Todd Rutherford says they are committing more than $20 billion over the next three years, “making this one of the biggest investments in transport and infrastructure in New Zealand’s history”.

“As the local Bay of Plenty MP this is very exciting, as it means that the Government is prioritising the delivery of Tauriko West State Highway 29 and the Takitimu Northern Link Stage 2, from Te Puna to Omokoroa.”

The draft GPS also establishes a new $500 million Pothole Prevention Fund – something that we campaigned on throughout the election.

“The state highway network needed over 62,000 potholes repaired in 2023 – the highest number in 10 years.

“Our fund commits $500m over three years to the repair and prevention of potholes, with a focus on achieving long term maintenance outcomes of repairing within 24 hours.

“We also have a plan to deliver more effective and efficient public transport.

“Our public transport plan will commit targeted investment of more than $4 billion over the next three years for public transport projects and services.”

Bay of Plenty MP Tom Rutherford.

Following consultation, the Ministry of Transport will use the feedback to provide advice to the Minister of Transport on the final GPS 2024.

The final GPS will into effect by July 2024.

People are invited to submit their feedback via email at GPS@transport.govt.nz or you can submit feedback via a consultation survey which is expected to open later today..

Consultation will close at 12pm on April 2, 2024.

Tauriko West Hwy 29 start time frame 4 to 10 years.
Way too long, this project needed to start 5 years ago.

Successive govts have jammed immigrants into NZ without foresight into schools,
roads, hospitals etc. NZ even had the rock star economy.

And how many new bridges did northland get when National announced a similar program?
ZERO
Don't believe a word, accept you will be paying more to drive - Rego UP, Petrol tax UP, Road tolls MORE. Congestion Tax coming soon...

Remember National pre election insisting their budget numbers were sound while every economist in the country was saying they had it all wrong and couldn't afford their promises.
Well I wonder who was lying - Luxon

As with taking over a previous Labour Govt's books they would have been worse than expected and what they expected was bad. So Yes, now we are going to be paying for the mis-spending and lack of results that Labour gave us for 6 years. Like teh National Coalition Govt, I am still wondering what Labour did with it all!!!
