Pausing the parking proposal

Tauranga City Council have taken community feedback on board and deferred several planned parking initiatives in the city, as well as delaying the roll-out of part-time bus lanes on Cameron Road.

Commission chair Anne Tolley says they have listened to the community and noted the frustration around these issues that affect residents, workers, businesses, and tourists in Tauranga.

“There has been concern within the community about potential changes to parking in both the city centre and Mount Maunganui,” says Anne.

“This has been raised with staff by residents, workers, and businesses in both parts of the city.

These concerns have often been compounded by a lack of other available parking, roadworks occurring in the local area, or a lack of safe and viable alternatives to travel by car.”

Anne says a pause and re-set is necessary and report on recommended future actions will be presented to council in March 2024.

“This additional time will allow for a more holistic examination of how parking initiatives may be compounding issues and causing concern in the community.

It also allows time to prepare and adjust to changes in a more measured manner.”

As well as deferring the parking project implementation, the Commission has pushed back the roll-out of time-limited clear-way bus lanes on Cameron Road, which were scheduled to start in January 2024.

Anne says Cameron Road Stage One, which is due to be completed by the end of 2023, has caused significant disruption to businesses and the community, with congestion and parking in and around Cameron Road a key concern.

“We are acutely aware of the issues facing many Cameron Road businesses because of the major road, water, and wastewater improvements underway.

In order to provide some relief the introduction of the clear-way lanes will be deferred and we will be working with the Bay of Plenty Regional Council to ensure that when we are ready to do this, it’s beneficial to both bus users and motorists who travel along Cameron Road.”

a thing of no great value given or done as a concession to appease someone whose main concerns or demands are not being met.

There is no "recognition?

Anne says ""a more holistic examination of how parking initiatives may be compounding issues and causing concern in the community." Really means that the community is up in arms, businesses and lives of many are being destroyed.... Oh dear we better delay it a month or tow perhaps.... then secretly shunt it through a couple a months later anyways.

Ann then says "It also allows time to prepare and adjust to changes in a more measured manner.” That is double speak, there is no plan to shelve any of this stupid, instead to merely shuffle it a little, give it a new name and do it anyway.

Least we forget.... "WE ARE LISTENING!"

Parking initiatives?

Look Commissioners, you have badly misjudged how far you can push commuters and CBD businesses. You have killed central Tauranga and tried to blame it on past Councils. This is squarely on your shoulders and that of your previous boss. She is not going to come back and apologise. I suggest you shelve further projects and leave them to be dropped or ratified by a competent democratically elected Council. I would also recommend that council employees including the CEO start working on your CVs. None of you have been good to ratepayers.

No sensible plan

Lack of a plan that minimizes disruption could be a major cause of frustration.
With so many areas of works going on the city is a shambles!
A plan to complete areas from one end of Cameron road to the other with all hands on deck should have lead to less disruption.
Don't you think?

What Deferment?

So Anne Tolley, you’ve listened to the community. What actual deferments are you talking about? A roll back of paid parking? A definite no to congestion charges? I mean you couldn’t wait to make sure the waterfront carpark was gone. One minute it was announced, next thing work began and how. I also suggest you completely shelve future projects for a future democratically elected council. Locals have had quite enough of your meddling and ruination of our city.

Council + Fab are to blame

The fab 4 are it seems facilitators to whatever the council wants.
We need accountability, do we live in a communist or dictatorship ?
The reversal just comes across as disingenuous and reeks of duplicity to try and pretend one is actually listening.
Well thats my thoughts if I'm actually allowed to comment for a change.

Who killed the CBD

Posted on 28-11-2023 10:48 | By Informed

As someone that has worked in the CBD for years, it was killed long before the current CE or commissioners turned up. It was killed by previous elected members and by the change in how people shop.
This is a global issue, seen time and again. Councils can only do so much in the face of big box malls. What's really required is for businesses in the CBD to reinvent themselves.
For those of us lucky enough to have travelled the world. The successful CBD's aren't reliant on mum and dad coming into the CBD to buy gifts or clothes.......
