Lane and road closures continue along avenues either side of Cameron Road in Tauranga this week.
The eastern side of the Eleventh Avenue intersection is now closed for three weeks, as the Tauranga City Council road works team works on a stormwater crossing from near Medex Radiology over Eleventh Avenue (east) towards Curtain Warehouse.
Diversions and signage are in place and the work is weather dependent.
There are also left lane closures around the north-east (Jay Car) and the south-east (The Flooring Room) corners from Cameron Road and into Eleventh Avenue (east). "The team is also about to carry out the remaining resurfacing work including some of the major intersections," says a council spokesperson.
"Some of these details are still being confirmed and we expect to be able to provide more detail next week. "We thank you for your patience and understanding while these essential upgrades are underway."
You can check here for travel updates. We also recommend checking Google Maps or Waka Kotahi NZTA Journey Planner. For more detailed information on these works, visit the road closures webpage.
Resurfacing "The team is in the process of resurfacing Cameron Road," says a council spokesperson.
"Because resurfacing cannot be carried out in wet weather, the team is planning to prepare the road surface approximately two weeks ahead of scheduled asphalting."
This involves milling the road - scraping off a layer of the road surface - in several sections in advance, so the team can move through faster when asphalting the final layer.
Some sections of road will appear partially-complete for longer than usual.
Resurfacing is usually carried out at nights from 6pm to 6am, although there will be some day works as well.
Most of this work will involve alternating lane closures, although there will be diversions in place when the team resurfaces the major intersections. Resurfacing works currently underway:
- Seventh Avenue to Ninth Avenue (west)
- 17th Avenue to Fifteenth Avenue (east and west)
- Eleventh Avenue intersection (west)
- Ninth Avenue intersection (west)
Upcoming resurfacing
- Fifteenth Avenue intersection: the team will be working at nights (6pm to 6am) to resurface this intersection from 6pm Sunday, 26 November (weather dependent). We expect this work to take five nights. There will be diversions in place while this work is underway. We expect to have more information about traffic impacts next week.
- Elizabeth Street intersection: the team will be working on all four corners of the intersection completing the final streetscape works. We now expect to be resurfacing the Elizabeth Street intersection from 6pm Sunday, 19 November. We expect this work to take five nights (weather dependent).

- Ninth Avenue (west): from 6pm Sunday, November 19, the team will be working to resurface Ninth Avenue (west). We expect this work to take two nights (weather dependent). Noise and vibration are associated with these works.

Work will start on the western side of Cameron Road, before moving to the eastern side. There are some smaller sections of road surface that require deeper milling. Once these deeper sections have been milled, the team will then continue with the resurfacing in this section.
- Fifteenth Avenue intersection: from 6pm Sunday, 26 November, the team will start work resurfacing at the Fifteenth Avenue Intersection. We expect this work to take five nights (weather dependent). There will be diversions in place while this work is underway.

From the city of road cones soon to be the city of traffic lights. Going to be a real challenge driving down Cameron Road soon when all these lights get turned on.

Will be until the next mistake when it will need to be dug up and re done! Not much point really as not many people drive or cycle there anyway.

Can't help but notice long stretches of Cameron barricaded off even though nobody is working in them. If the council was serious about completing this work with minimum disruption to the ratepayer's, the work sites would be busy 24/7. Go to Europe or the USA to see how quickly similar jobs are completed. Also the quoted price is final and there are significant financial penalties should the work run over the allowed time.
Increased effort.

On Saturday, as I attended the Farmer's Market at Tauranga Primary, I noticed workmen on the site. One guy was driving a digger and the other was on his phone. Still, the fact they were there on a Saturday may mean there is an increased effort in the attempt to finish these works. davidt5 is correct that overseas contractors would be derisive of the time this is taking, and the degree of permitted disruption. W2 commented on the lights; I wondered about this also. It smacks of corruption... hope not. nerak is asking a valid question but she won't get an answer; there is no end in sight because it "all depends on the weather". If this is really the best we can do, its very hard to have faith that the CBD will be recovered... I see years of work just to fix the damage being done.

I recently slipped over walking along the "newly improved & safer" footpath area near a bus stop.
Just happened to see a cyclist riding along with skin off her knees to.
Makes you wonder if all the disruption for the shop owners is going to continue when TCC realise they've made a few mistakes.
No parking means more foot traffic... just not in the wet when it's slippery.
Goodluck shop owners, just move to the nearest mall, it's obviously what this council want.
Shared paths

I am particularly impressed by the sheer genius of the person that decided it's a good idea to have a shared pedestrian/cycle path hard against the shop frontages on the west side of Cameron Road. What could possibly go wrong?
