Work continues along Cameron Road this week with a large focus on resurfacing.
"Resurfacing is a milestone activity for the team because it is among the final elements of construction," says a Tauranga City Council spokesperson.
Resurfacing involves digging up the surface to even the road before laying down a new asphalt surface.
"This usually takes place at night to minimise disruption, with lane closures and diversions in place."
Because asphalting cannot occur in wet weather, some works may take longer to complete.

The team is also planting the centre median along Cameron Road.
"There will be right lane closures around planting zones, which will shift as work progresses."
Each section of work is expected to take up to four days. "We also ask those travelling between the city centre and Tauranga Hospital to be aware of some night closures (6pm to 6am) that are currently underway and coming up at the 17th Avenue intersection.
"This work involves deep hydrovac excavation trenching across Cameron Road in three locations."
There is noise and vibration associated with this work. The locations and times are:
- From 6pm Sunday, 17 September, to 6am Monday, 18 September, and again from 6pm Tuesday, 19 September, to 6am Wednesday, 20 September, southbound traffic (heading towards the Hospital from the city) on Cameron Road will be diverted along Sixteenth Avenue (east), Devonport Road and 17th Avenue. Access to properties will be maintained.
- From 6pm Monday, 18 September, to 6am Tuesday, 19 September, northbound traffic will be diverted along 17th Avenue, Devonport Road and Fifteenth Avenue. If work is not completed within these dates, it may continue into the following week.
- Work will also be underway for two nights (6pm to 6am) from 6pm Wednesday, 20 September, to 6am Friday 22, September, at the north-west (My Ride cycle shop) corner of the intersection within the existing northbound left lane closure.
- Work will also be underway for five nights (6pm to 6am) from 6pm Sunday, 24 September, on the north-east (Tech Logic) and north-west (My Ride cycle shop) corners of the 17th Avenue intersection to install the new traffic signal ducts, chambers and poles. This work will also occur within the existing lane closures around these corners of the intersection.

- Thirteenth Avenue intersection resurfacing: from 6pm Monday, 18 September, our team will be carrying out resurfacing works on Cameron Road at the Thirteenth Avenue intersection. We expect this work to take five nights (6pm to 6am). First, we will resurface the eastern (Tauranga Boys’ College) side of the intersection. Traffic heading south will be diverted along Twelfth Avenue, Fraser Street and Fifteenth Avenue to return to Cameron Road. We will then move over to resurface the western (Tauranga Citizens Club) side. Northbound traffic will be diverted along Fourteenth Avenue, Christopher Street and Twelfth Avenue to return to Cameron Road. There is noise and vibration associated with these works, which involve the milling of the existing road surface before laying down new asphalt. These works are weather dependent and may continue into following nights.
- Cameron Road at the Eleventh Avenue intersection: work to install traffic signal ducting across Cameron Road is underway at nights (6pm to 6am) from the south-west corner (McDonald's) to the south-east corner (The Flooring Room). There will be alternating lane closures while this work, which is expected to take one week (weather dependent), is underway. This work involves saw-cutting and excavation. Noise and vibration are associated with this work. Work is also underway to install traffic signal ducting on the north-west corner (Z service station) to the north-east corner (Jay Car). This work involves saw-cutting and excavation. There is noise and vibration associated with this work.
- Cameron Road southbound lanes between Eleventh Avenue and Thirteenth Avenue: work is continuing on resurfacing, which we expect to take a further three nights (weather dependent). Traffic will be diverted along Eleventh Avenue, Devonport Road and Thirteenth Avenue. This work is weather dependent and may continue into coming week.
- Cameron Road southbound lanes between Ninth Avenue and Eleventh Avenue: there are currently alternating southbound lane closures on Cameron Road at nights (6pm to 6am) for resurfacing. We expect this work to be completed in the coming week (weather dependent). Noise and vibration is associated with this work.
- Cameron Road southbound lanes between Sixth Avenue and Ninth Avenue: from 6pm Sunday, 24 September, the southbound lanes of Cameron Road will be closed at nights (6pm to 6am) for two weeks for resurfacing. There will be alternating lane closures while this work is underway. Access to properties will be maintained. This work is weather dependent.
- Cameron Road southbound lanes between Sixth Avenue and Ninth Avenue: from 6pm Sunday, 24 September, the southbound lanes of Cameron Road will be closed at nights (6pm to 6am) for resurfacing. We expect this work to take five nights (weather dependent). There will be alternating lane closures while this work is underway. Access to properties will be maintained.
- Centre median between Fourth Avenue and Third Avenue (west): from 6pm Sunday, 17 September, the team will begin work on the new right-hand turning bay at Third Avenue. We expect this work to take three weeks (weather dependent). There will be northbound lane closures in place at nights (6pm to 6am).
- Fifteenth Avenue intersection resurfacing works: in the coming weeks, our team will be resealing the Fifteenth Avenue intersection. We expect this work to take three nights (weather dependent). Noise and vibration are associated with this work. There will be lane closures and diversions in place while this work is underway. More information, including dates and any diversions will follow.
Intersection work:
- Cameron Road/ Elizabeth Street (east): the southbound left lane of Cameron Road (north-east corner, outside Pacific Toyota) for turning left into Elizabeth Street (east) is now fully open.
- Elizabeth Street (west)/ Cameron Road (north-west corner, outside Brain Watkins House Museum): there is a left lane closure for traffic turning left from Elizabeth Street (west) on to Cameron Road.
- Third Avenue (west): is exit only.
- Fourth Avenue (west): from 6pm Sunday, 17 September, there will be a full closure of this intersection for four weeks. Fourth Avenue will be accessible via Fifth Avenue (west) and Edgecumbe Road.
- Arundel Street: is entry only.
- Fourth Avenue (west): will close from 6pm Sunday, 17 September, for four weeks but will remain accessible via Fifth Avenue (west) and Edgecumbe Road.
- Fifth Avenue (east): is entry only.
- Fifth Avenue (west): is entry only.
- Seventh Avenue (west): is permanently closed to traffic as it becomes a green space cul-de-sac.
- Eighth Avenue (west): is now open.
- Ninth Avenue (west): is fully closed.
- Eleventh Avenue/ Cameron Road intersection: there are lane closures along Cameron Road and into Eleventh Avenue (east) around the Z Service Station corner. We expect to move to the eastern side of the intersection early October.
- Twelfth Avenue intersection (west): is exit only.
- Fifteenth Avenue/ Cameron Road intersection: work is underway on the north-east (Tauranga Boys’ College) and north-west (Work Safe) corners.
- Sixteenth Avenue (east): is now open.
- Sixteenth Avenue (west): is now open.
