One dead after car hits tree

UPDATE 6.35AM: One person is dead following a crash on Tauranga Road.

Police confirmed the fatality in a statement this morning.

The death follows a crash where a car collided with a tree on Tauranga Road, Te Poi, Matamata-Piako District at 8.10pm.

"Enquiries into the circumstances of the crash are under way," says a police spokesperson.

Anyone with information about the crash is advised to contact their nearest police station.

Alternatively, information can be phoned in anonymously via the Crimestoppers 0800 555 111 line.

Non-emergency information can be given to police for their 105 number.

EARLIER:

Tauranga Road near Te Poi is open this morning following a serious crash.

Police were called to a one vehicle crash, where a vehicle collided with a tree on Tauranga Road, Te Poi, Matamata-Piako District.

The crash was reported at 8.10pm, says a police spokesperson.

The Serious Crash Unit was called to investigate the scene.

The road was blocked between State Highway 27 and Matamata township, with diversions are in place.

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency reports the road re-opened around 2.30am.
