Police are making enquiries following a fatal crash near Whakatāne on Friday night.

One person has died in the crash that occurred on Taneatua Road, Whakatāne.

"The single vehicle crash was reported to Police at 11.55pm," says a police spokesperson.

"The road was closed while the Serious Crash Unit examined the scene but reopened at around 4.30am."

Police say enquiries into the circumstances of the crash are under way.
