She’s been in the sevens game for only a year – but has already been selected for the New Zealand Condor Sevens Under-15 team, who are heading to play in France this week.

Waiariki Gear is ecstatic about experiencing her trip overseas, and playing for the Rugby Heritage Cup, which will be held in the French village of Pontlevoy.

The 14-year-old says her mum, Tania Faulkner, and her dad, George Gear, couldn’t be more proud after watching her play rugby since she was five-years-old.

“I found out I was selected about a month ago. My mum was nearly in tears when I told her. Dad is really proud too, he’s been coaching me for a long time.”

Waiariki says her dad has always told her having a positive attitude and putting in the training will helkp her get results, and it is something she says she still lives by to this day.

“You could be the best player, but if you don’t have the right attitude, it might not matter. You could be not the best player with a great attitude, and go really far.”

After first being scouted at a rugby tournament in Hamilton, Waiariki then began the process of putting her name down for the New Zealand Condor Sevens Under-15 team.

She says at her school, Te Wharekura o Mauao, her classmates and teachers were “really excited” to hear about her big trip.

“They felt really honoured I was able to represent the New Zealand team coming from their school.”

Waiariki says she will return from her trip in two weeks, but is keen to get stuck in, socialise and play some good rugby.

“I’m excited to learn about different cultures, meet new people and play with the rest of the New Zealand team.”

Waiariki thanks her mum and dad, and her coach Clayton Parai for helping her get this far.
