One person has died in a serious crash in Waikato.

It involved a car and a tanker and happened just before 1.50am on State Highway 26, between Eureka and Morrinsville, says a police spokesperson.

"The driver of the tanker had moderate injuries, and the driver of the car died at the scene.

"The road is now open."
