State Highway 35 is closed near Hawai in eastern Bay of Plenty, following a serious crash.

Emergency services are attending the scene of the crash involving two vehicles.

The crash, between Opotiki and Te Araroa, was reported to police shortly before 2.30pm.

"Initial indications are that there have been injuries," says a police spokesperson.

Waka Kotahi NZTA advise that due to the serious crash, SH35 Hawai SH35 Hawai is now closed between Torere Beach and Hawai Beach.

"Delay your journey or allow extra time for a detour," says an NZTA spokesperson.

"Diversions are in place. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and expect delay," says a police spokesperson.
