Update: 11.29am Following an earlier serious crash, State Highway 2 near Pukehina has now reopened.

SH2 between Ohinepanea Rd and Old Coach Rd was closed on Saturday night following a crash around 10.50pm.

One person has died and a further two people were transported to hospital to be assessed for injuries.

The serious crash unit have been on-site on Sunday morning undertaking investigations, but the road has now been reopened.

"Please expect some delays whilst residual traffic clear," says a Waka Kotahi NZTA spokesperson.

Earlier, 7am: One person has died following a crash near Pukehina on Saturday night.

"Police can confirm one person has died following a crash on SH2, Pukehina last night around 10.50pm," says a police spokesperson.

"A further two people were transported to hospital to be assessed for injuries."

The road will remain closed while a scene examination takes place.

"Due to a serious crash at Pukehina, SH2 is closed between Ohinepanea Rd and Old Coach Rd," says a Waka Kotahi NZTA spokesperson.

"The serious crash unit are on-site undertaking investigations. Avoid the area and use alternative routes."

"There are detours in place that are suitable for heavy vehicles," says a police spokesperson.

"An investigation into the crash is ongoing."
