People walking along the beach near Papamoa are being warned to be careful as there are reports of oil sticking to people's feet and shoes.
Callers to the 0800 SunLive news hotline say they have had friends who have gone walking on the beach and when they have returned home, they have found spots of oil on their feet.
Oil is sticking to the bottom of people's feet and footwear after they have walked along the beach near Papamoa.
One caller says he was walking on the stretch of beach near the Papamoa Surf Club and didn't see any oil on the beach, but noticed it on the bottom of his jandels when he got back to the car park at Papamoa.
'I just want people to be aware of it.”
Oil washed ashore last year, when the Rena struck the Astrolabe Reef on October5.
The beaches along the Mount Maunganui and Papamoa coastline were closed for several weeks teams of clean-up crews worked to remove as much oil as they could from the beach.
At the time of the clean-up, a Maritime New Zealand spokesperson said people may continue to see oil as it comes closer to the surface.
There have been no confirmed reports of fresh oil washing up on the beaches.
Meanwhile, salvage crews are continuing to remove steel from the bow of the Rena, which is still afloat on Astrolabe Reef.
