Tauranga residents are being warned to prepare for major works at the intersection of Cameron Road and 11th Ave.
A stormwater upgrade, and work to upgrade the traffic signals will begin on the western side of Cameron Road near McDonald's and the Z service station on Sunday, July 23.
"Work at this intersection is expected to take four months (weather dependent) as the work moves around all four corners of the intersection," says a Tauranga City Council spokesperson.
"The majority of work will be during the day with some work taking place at night when required."
Council says there will be lane closures along Cameron Road and around the corners of the intersection and into 11th Ave while works are underway. Noise and vibration are associated with these works.
"Drivers are advised to avoid the intersection if possible, as major traffic delays can be expected.
"Local residents and businesses will still have vehicle access. Pedestrian and cyclist access will be maintained at all times.
"Tauranga City Council and the Cameron Road Joint Venture thank you for your patience and understanding while we carry out this essential work."

Four months to install some lights and drains. Night work, IF REQUIRED. Given that this is a critical junction wouldn't there be a requirement to get it done as quickly as possible? I'd put more people on it and work shifts... Maybe the work should be sub-contracted to a Chinese construction company...
I agree.....

..with you morepork, I would suspect there are 'certain' preferred ( as per council requirements) suppliers and cannot see why such works would be any different, and having such agreement in place there are limited service suppliers available. I would say there are many other contractors who would be more than happy and available to offer their service at a far more competitive cost and greater efficiency....would any care to comment?...and yes, if it were necessary to use overseas skills for the job, it would be completed on time and at the contracted cost without variation....

why outsource from a Chinese construction company? so our roads and buildings can be considered more tofu than they already are? should look into the problems plaguing chinese buildings, roads, infrastructure, the environmental destruction, the piles of cars and bikes on satellite to look like fields, literally putting rocks on rebar and painting dead ground green to fool people that say things like you just did.

Only worse it's creeping death for business as the delays and slow pace of work continues. The idea of better traffic flow a complete nonsense. Already can take near an hour to travel the length of Cameron but losing a lane for buses and extra stopping for crossings we shall see but it is predictable not going to be good. Can't for the life of me see why an extra pedestrian crossing near thirteenth ave is necessary as it's so close to the thirteenth ave lights! so can't school just walk that far ? Years of disruption with so long to go . Cancel CBD and Cameron road unless dire need , shame for the poor businesses. Fix Barkes corner and route K Tauriko would have a far better result on traffic flow

I suggested a Chinese contractor with tongue in cheek (not entirely seriously). My comment was based on the track record for construction projects generally, in China. As for "tofu" roads, do you think our Kiwi built roads are any LESS "tofu"? Not just in China, but in MANY countries there is a different attitude towards construction than "She'll be right, Mate...". In most countries they recognize that disruption due to construction has to be minimized, for the benefit of everyone, and they work accordingly; here, it is seen as a chance to make a few bob for as long as possible...

No worries, I respect you as your comments are some of the better thought out that we can find here.
I see your point with Kiwi vs China construction and im not about to say good things take time because not alot I can see about Cameron rd and modern construction ethics/constraints is great- certainly agree it shouldn't be taking this long. Atleast if it was chinese crews we'd have enough infrastructure to bridge a 5 maybe 10 year if we really push it like tauranga is trying to now, well until we can dust out the soulless husks from government and come up with a solution for this mess NZ has found itself in.
Appreciate your logic, keep it real bruz.
