A Mount Maunganui Rugby Club facebook post summed up the two club rugby finals played at Maramatanga Park on Saturday - "Mud, mud and more mud".
Te Puna, by virtue of finishing as top qualifiers and winning through to the title deciders in both the BOPRU Baywide and WBOP Sub-Union Development championships, hosted both games against Mount Maunganui at Maramatanga Park.
The premier encounter was homage to old school wet-weather rugby. Te Puna made the early running and led by 18 unanswered points after 40 minutes. A courageous Jordy Stone, playing at halfback, had taken a hammering but stayed on the field to score the first Te Puna touchdown.
The Te Puna forwards were dominant with ball in hand and on defence the backs were clinical with their kicking putting pressure back on Mount Maunganui.
Mount Maunganui came back with two converted tries and fought to the bitter end, but it was the upfront work from Te Puna which sealed a 23-14 victory. Mount Maunganui can hold their heads in high in running Te Puna right down to the wire.
Te Puna winger, Harris Williams, was the star of the show on defence administering some big hit to the repeated Mount attacks. The Te Puna premier victory sits with the 2019 Baywide title in the club's centennial season.
The Western Bay of Plenty Sub-Union Development championship entree to the main event was described as a tit-for-tat tactical battle. Te Puna came out of the gates firing on all cylinders and dominated the territorial battle. However the Mount dug deep and were able to claw it back in the second half.
The home side were able to hold the line and keep their opponents out for a win by the barest of margins, with the scoreboard showing, Te Puna 19 Mount Maunganui 17.
Mount Maunganui, who were the dominant team in the BOPRU Colts competition, kept their season unbeaten record intact in defeating Te Puna at Blake Park.
In the first of three Te Puna verses Mount Maunganui, on club finals day, the Mount young men had a good battle with the team from the Western Bay extremities.
Mount Maunganui led 14-10 at the break, before earning a 23-17 win, to clinch the Bay of Plenty Rugby age-group crown. The Mount facebook page summed up the victory "Mean mahi boys, what a way to bring it home".
