A person is in critical condition following a vehicle crash in Rotorua.

Emergency services are in attendance at a two-car crash in Rotorua which has closed a state highway.

"It happened about 8:20am on Fairy Springs Road, between Monokia Street and Russell Road," says a police spokesperson.

"One person is in critical condition, and Police's Serious Crash Unit has been advised."

Waka Kotahi NZTA advise that the serious crash has been reported to emergency services south of Kawaha Point Rd.

"Delays are possible. Diversions may be required," says an NZTA spokesperson.

A detour is in place. For an alternative route southbound motorists are advised to turn left onto Kowaha Point Rd, right onto Kouhu Rd, right onto Bennetts Rd, right onto Lake Rd, left onto SH5.
