Slips and flooding causing road closures

Update, 1.20pm: Flooding and slips are affecting Bay of Plenty and Central District region roads.

State Highway 30 remains closed to westbound traffic and will likely remain closed the rest of the weekend says a Waka Kotahi NZTA spokesperson.

The detour route for traffic has now changed, due to a serious crash on State Highway 2 Matata. SH2 is now closed.

Eastbound traffic detour via SH33, SH30, SH5, SH38 towards Murupara. Turn left on to Kopuriki Rd, left on to Galatea Rd towards SH30 via Te Teko, turn right on to SH30 and continue towards Awakeri to SH2.

The closure pm SH30 comes following slips, flooding and severe weather on Friday and Saturday.

"We're expecting this will take three to four hours to clear. We'll keep you updated,' says a Whakatane District Council spokesperson.

Earlier, 12.15pm: "Drive to the conditions if you must travel"

This is the request from police who are dealing with many incidents across the Bay of Plenty and Central District regions.

In the Bay of Plenty State Highway 30 remains closed. In the Central District region police are responding to a number of weather-related callouts, and are warning motorists to slow down.

A number of vehicles have lost traction in floodwater on State Highway 1 at Taihape, and slips continue to be reported across the district.

Police have been alerted to several minor crashes, and motorists are warned to drive to the conditions, especially in areas vulnerable to slips and surface flooding.

"Avoid travel if possible," says a police spokesperson.

Westbound traffic (including those traveling to Rotorua) detour via SH34, SH2, SH33 and back on to SH30.

Please note this detour will add up to an hour to your journey, plan your trip accordingly.

Note the road remains open to eastbound traffic.
