7pm Update: One person has died following a two-vehicle crash on State Highway 2 at Pongakawa.

Another person is reported to have sustained moderate injuries.

Police were called to the crash about 5.40pm.

The road is expected to remain closed for some time.

Diversions are currently in place at SH2/Maniatutu Road and SH2/Pongakawa School Road.

"Please continue to avoid the area if possible," says a police spokesperson.

Earlier, 6.20pm: Emergency services are attending a serious two-vehicle crash on State Highway 2/ Te Puke East Road at Pongakawa.

"Police were called about 5.40pm," says a police spokesperson.

The serious crash on SH2 is near Tainui Rd, Paengaroa.

"The road is closed and the Serious Crash Unit will attend the scene."

Motorists are advised to follow directions of emergency services at the scene.

"Please avoid the area or expect delays."
