UPDATE 12.44pm: Police are advising one person has died following a crash on State Highway 27 near Tirau this morning.

"The crash, involving a car and a diesel tanker, was reported to Police at 11.10am," says a police spokesperson.

"The driver of the car tragically died at the scene.

"The road is expected to remain closed for several hours and motorists are advised to take alternative routes.

EARLIER 12.19pm: State Highway 27 is closed after a serious crash involving a car and a truck.

A power pole was also impacted in the collision, bringing power lines down on to the road, according to police.

The closure is between MacMillan Road and Langlands Road, near Tirau.

"The crash was reported to Police at 11.10am and involved a car and a truck.

"Initial information from the scene is that one person was critically injured.

"The road is expected to remain closed for some time and traffic management is being put in place.

"An update will be provided when more information is available."
