UPDATE 8.42pm: State Highway 2 is now closed between Tāneatua and Nukuhou due to flooding and slips.

The closure was previously in place from Awakeri to Ōpōtiki, but has since been narrowed down.

Earlier 6.30pm: State Highway 2 is closed between Awakeri and Ōpōtiki.

A Waka Kotahi spokesperson says the road is being closed due to "multiple flooding and slip locations".

"Delay your journey and avoid this area if possible."

The spokesperson adds an update will be provided at 9am, May 3.
